New Museum Building
Design Proposals.
Planning for a new Museum Building has now reached the stage where we have viable and outstanding design proposals. A newly appointed Museum Rebuild Committee held a competition among local architects which has resulted in a winning design by Perry Barnes & Greg Watts Architects Ltd. of Leatherhead that can be truly called “A Civic Building”. The pictures and elevation drawings give some idea how the new museum will appear when completed.
Now the serious work begins. Talks must be held with MVDC Planners to iron out any points they may wish to raise before a formal planning application is submitted. Then in, conjunction with the architect, floor plans will need to be finalised, an archaeological dig arranged and the ground tested for contaminants. Tenders will then be obtained for the demolition of the old building and the construction of the new one. These costs, plus fitting out costs, will tell us how much we will need (over and above the remaining funds in the Owen Russ bequest) to raise from donations, grants etc; the requirement is expected to be in excess of £200,000.
The Museum will have improved facilities for the display of artefacts and provision for research into local history in the archive section.
